Since day one, Smartdesc has worked relentlessly to go above and beyond service expectations. Part of the Academia Technology Group, with a combined turnover of £150m and 200+ staff, the goal has always been to provide higher levels of IT support and proactive customer care than charities and nonprofits receive elsewhere. Our focus is on keeping overheads low to enable cost-savings to be passed on at every opportunity.

About us
Our History
Founded in 2011, Smartdesc was built entirely to serve the nonprofit technology sector.
Our founders, Chris Cranie and Adam Monks, spent their formative years working with charities and IT Managed Service Providers of all shapes and sizes. They shared a passion for providing IT services that were not only high quality but also added strategic value, leadership and shared experiences across organisations that might not benefit from the same resources as their corporate equivalents.
They firmly believed that charities should and could be able to partner with IT experts who speak their language, deliver quality services, remain accountable and work side-by-side, as opposed to the traditional customer/supplier relationship.


About us
Building Smartdesc
With IT Strategy built into every client relationship, this unique model started with our Virtual IT Director service – bringing fractional IT Leadership into organisations that could otherwise not have justified the full-time equivalent cost of salary.
The model proved extremely popular and since then, Smartdesc has grown to over 80 staff across 3 countries, with a turnover in excess of £10m and a 98% client retention rate.
We still operate the dedicated Virtual IT Director practice, and have added a portfolio of Managed IT Services; from Helpdesk and co-managed IT Support to Hardware Lifecycle, Cyber, Compliance and Professional Services. We are a Tier 1 Direct CSP with Microsoft, sitting inside their top 150 worldwide of Microsoft Solutions Partners with a nonprofit focus, and major specialisms in Modern Work and Azure.
