Use of personal phones and tablets – Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) – continues to grow in popularity as a way to offer choice to staff and volunteers, whilst reducing hardware costs.
With this flexibility comes the challenge of governance and control: maintaining security of corporate data without placing prohibitive restrictions or “big brother” monitoring on personal devices that may deter uptake.
Even where organisations do provide mobile devices to staff, the risk of a data breach should the device be misused, lost or stolen is a serious one.
There are numerous expensive Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions out there, but the challenge is always in the configuration, communication and management of these systems – convincing employees to enrol their personal device can be difficult, as they are fearful of what their IT department will be able to see and do.
